Celebrations that invite us to observe a historical occurrence are still strongly practiced in contemporary culture. Halloween, as celebrated is America, profoundly depicts the strongest features from gothic and horror literature, film, TV, and graphic arts. Among the repertoire of traditional characters, the zombie distinguishes itself for possessing the biology and behavior of a normal human being, yet lacks consciousness. This exhibition uses the vernacular of the mythological zombie as a starting point to engage in ideas of death, mindlessness and symbolisms for the occult and inexplicable. The term zombie also intends to address issues referring to the mindless self in a social spectrum: leading and following; acts of automatism and fanatic behaviors.

From 6:30-7:00pm on opening night:
Join author Scott Kenemore, artist Mindy Rose Schuartz and collaborators Teena McClelland and Michelle Maynard from Death by Design Co. in conversation. They will talk about the darkness that enlightens their work. Screening of the film made by Death by Design Co. immediately after the conversation. Moderated by Edra Soto

'BEHIND THE FANGS'
Threewalls Gallery Spring Fundraiser video document
Friday, May 29th 8:30-11:30 PM with a 7:30 PM VIP Preview.
A one-of-a-kind event, You Oughta Be in Fangs is an immersive evening where the prohibition era meets the undead, all housed in Chicago’s spectacular International Museum of Surgical Science.

Unlike any other event, You Oughta Be in Fangs is an artist-designed and directed ‘experience’ where guests become ‘part of the art’

Join us at, You Oughta Be in Fangs, where decadent 1920s party-goers in search of hot-jazz and free-flowing booze, head to a secret speakeasy run by the conjoined Whisper Sisters. Assisted by a team of waxen virgins and undead goons, the Sisters entice their guests with vampish performers, seductive strains and intoxicating elixirs. But watch your step – lest you should shimmy straight into the arms of their Vampire suitors, who slip incognito through the euphoric crowd, adding to their brood.

Featuring hot-jazz by D.J. Coffin Banger, a medicine show by Sanjula Vamana, mystery and magic by Tomas the Geek Magician, saucey Burlesque by Lily White Sass (Deb Webb), vampire bites by The Bleeding Heart Bakery,  delectable wine provided by Cream Wine Company, creative cocktails by Viridian Spirits, open casket portraits, a secret potion Scavenger Hunt, prohibition era coffin varnish (ie. booze) and much much more. ALSO, look out for Sister Wendy and Father Carl’s Karaoke Fun Zone and Hymen Deconstruction Service.....
Protect yourself from the undead! Gretchen Holmes and Ross Moreno (a real life married couple) invite you to experience all of the fun and excitement of religious karaoke.
Costumes encouraged! Be reborn this spring as the eternally undead!

Death by Design, Co., is a special effects and video-based company established by artists Michelle Maynard and Teena McClelland in May 2005. The Death by Design team constructs film sets and immersive environments at select locations where clients are invited to enter the set and engage in an in-depth conversation with life through their own "Hollywood" death. Visitors can either watch the action unfold or be part of the story-line, infiltrating the artwork as live (and dead) bodies.

You Oughta Be in Fangs is DXD's first ‘party’ environment/installation, where party-goers, immersed in the set, become characters in a speak-easy riddled with the undead.

Pole Position

The removal of "dangerous" art has an uncomfortable
precedent in Chicago--who can forget the "arrest" of a
student painting of the recently deceased mayor Harold
Washington in women's underwear in the late eighties? So
when reports surfaced of an art removal at UIC last week,
culture-war nightmares were conjured up. "The UIC police
were responding to reports that came to them through the
public and they were witness to several almost-accidents.
So they were concerned about safety issues," Lorelei
Stewart, director of UIC Gallery 400 says, in explaining the
problems with the dummy impaled on a flagpole. The
flagpole is the site for Philip von Zweck's project
"Temporary Allegiance" in which people are invited to hoist
a flag of their choice for one week at a time. "Philip's
project has been established and has been functioning so
that the public has a way to respond to it. It's a really
interesting venue for a voice, so that a number of people
can express themselves through the flag," Stewart says,
who helps to facilitate von Zweck's project while
maintaining a distinction between it and Gallery 400. Artist
Michelle Maynard contributed the macabre mannequin-"
she wanted to fly a flag in conjunction with her show,"
Stewart explains. Maynard is currently in a collaborative
exhibit with Teena McClelland called "Death By Design,
Co." at Gallery 400, in which the general public can
star in the staging and filming of their own horror-movie
death scenes. After several UIC policemen arrived one
morning to assess the situation and witnessed several
near-accidents, the dummy was taken down by Maynard
and a gallery staff member. "In my position, I had to talk to
several different departments and figure out a way to put
up the flag to mitigate traffic concerns," Stewart explains.
The flag was replaced in time for the opening that evening.
"What I had to do was negotiate with [the administration]
that we could have [the flag] up and meet those safety
issues. Part of the reason was that we hadn't gotten those
answers and I was over-eager." The dummy resumed its
perch at half-mast and controversy persisted the next day
when "it was taken down by members of facilities
management who hadn't gotten confirmation that all the
safety concerns had been addressed. Since the thing was
permanently drilled around the pole they had to pull it
apart. So they pulled it apart and broke the wooden
structure on the inside." Although hoisted flags are not
insured as artwork, Maynard will be compensated and
"Temporary Allegiance" will continue as planned. "It comes
with the territory," Stewart adds, commenting on the
reaction to the unconventional nature of the work. "When
we do that the other side of the coin is that one of our
responsibilities is to educate people who aren't so familiar
with work of this kind."
